This illustration is based on the quote, “Without monsters and gods, art cannot enact our drama: art's most profound moments express this frustration,” by Mark Rothko.
When I first read this quote, I was reminded of the origin story of Rome: Romulus and Remus being nursed by the She-wolf, Lupa. She nurtured the two boys who would later be instrumental in the founding of Rome. I found it interesting how an animal that often incites fear could, according to mythology, foster the origins of one of the most powerful cities in history.
We require fantastical origin stories to establish our standing and meaning in society and in the world as a whole. These stories allow us to assign power to ourselves through human intelligence and ingenuity.
